How to test your testosterone level – easy to use home test kits

About this review

Are you thinking of getting a home test kit for testosterone level testing?

Well, don’t worry about jumping into this seemingly new concept and large jungle of tests, because we have summarized up all you need to know here.

In this article, we’ll help you with information about testosterone, why you need it, symptoms of low testosterone, and in the bottom of this text also given you a summarized list of some of the best testosterone home tests kits on the market today. This way you can make a more informed decision before buying either of easy order home testosterone test kits.

What is a home test kit for testosterone

Just a short recap and making sure that we are all on the same page, let’s revise what exactly is a home test kit for testosterone.

Basically, this home test kit enables you to measure your testosterone levels either via saliva or blood testing (depending on the kit) in the comfort and convenience of your very own home.

That’s why many people take this as a practical and money saving alternative to regular doctor appointed testing.

Easy order home test kits for testosterone, if I may, are revolutionary! If you’re still sceptical about this, we’ll let the facts speak for itself in a short while.

Who should use a testosterone home test kit?

You would probably be thinking; are you qualified or fit to take a test especially when you’re doing this on your own or even, doing it for a relative at home.

If you are physically and mentally fit, this should not be an issue of worry for you. It is a simple prick on the finger or spit from the mouth. The sample is then transported safely to the laboratories for the analysis to be done (1). Blood samples show no change in 72h for sure, plenty of time for it to come where it is headed (11). As for saliva samples leaving them unrefrigerated at room temperature for up to two weeks has been shown to have no effect on the results. Also sending them unrefrigerated doesn’t make any difference. Keep in mind that this is only in case of male specimens, while for females it has led to inflated results. (12).

Doing this testosterone testing is highly recommended for male individuals who are close to 30 years of age or above. This is because of the nature of testosterone levels which are taking a dip by 1% every year starting from 30 years old (2).

Also, research has shown that individuals who are obese, suffer from pituitary gland issues and, injuries to the nether regions are more likely to have low testosterone hormone levels (3, 4). Some, even before the expected age of 30.

If you are diabetic, you might be in rumination on whether even the slightest prick would lead to unstoppable bleeding. However, fret not, the blood test for the home test kits are very similar to your blood sugar tests! Also, with every health intervention or product, comes a own set of contraindications for safety measures.

For the home test kits for testosterones, these the following exceptions of people who should NOT participate:

  • HIV-positive individuals
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Individuals with excessive bleeding disorders

If you fall into any of these three categories, please seek advice from a physician instead.

The risks are being unable to find the vein, excessive bleeding, giddiness, hematoma, or infection may also be a reason (5). However, this is not normal for these simple tests. And other than that, the ease of a home testosterone testing would do much more good than bad.

Reasons to take a testosterone home test

Being aware of your testosterone levels are crucially important especially if you fall into any of these categories (3, 4):

  • Obese
  • Suffer from pituitary gland issues
  • Injuries to the groin or testicles
  • Symptoms of low testosterones (decreased body hair, erectile dysfunction)
  • Low libido
  • Signs of depressions
  • Lack of energy
  • Decreased strength
  • Loss muscle mass (or atrophy)
  • Increased fat mass
  • Consistent low self-esteem
  • Alcoholic
  • Growth of breast tissue (gynecomastia)
  • Delayed or early puberty
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • User of anabolic steroids

“What can a testosterone test kit tell me about my health status”

So, a testosterone test kit will show you numbers in units in ng/dL. What do those numbers mean and what does it say about my health status?

Although this test is more commonly used by males, their female counterparts are users of this product as well.

To understand better, you will need to know if the numbers you see indicates your testosterone levels are on the good or bad side of the scale.

Here is a table that show the normal testosterone hormone level ranges for both males and female throughout the ages:

Male Female
Age T Level (ng/dL): Age T Level (ng/dL):
0-5 mo. 75-400 0-5 mo. 20-80
6 mos.-9 yrs. <7-20 6 mos.-9 yrs. <7-20
10-11 yrs. <7-130 10-11 yrs. <7-44
12-13 yrs. <7-800 12-16 yrs. <7-75
14 yrs. <7<1,200
15-16 yrs. 100-1,200
17-18 yrs. 300-1,200 17-18 yrs. 20-75
19+ yrs. 240-950 19+ yrs. 20-75
Avg. adult male 270-1,070 Avg. adult female 15-70

Important thing to take away from this is that testosterone in your body doesn’t come in one form. More correctly, testosterone used by body cells is a small fraction of total testosterone in body called free testosterone.

Other group is called bound testosterone and like the name suggests testosterone is bound to proteins in blood. These proteins are called sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin.

Bound testosterone takes up a significant number of total testosterone at around 97% . The remaining is not attached to protein and therefore free for cells to take and use (13). SHBG binds around 65% and albumin takes up the rest. While SHBG bound testosterone is considered inactive, it is now considered that albumin bound testosterone could be active (14, 15).

Testosterone and estrogen are closely bound in human body and present in both men and women. Although dominant in women men also have estrogen circulating in blood. Actually, estrogen in male body is made from testosterone via enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme can be found in fat tissue, brain, liver and muscle.

In there lies the biggest concern, as people tend to lean to obesity more in modern society body naturally produces more estrogen in fat cells. Which, in turn leaves less testosterone to be used (16).

This means that your body could be out hormonal balance needed to maintain optimal health, and is a good reason to check up on levels of testosterone

Basically, the normal range of testosterone levels for an adult male is 250 to 1100 ng/dL and 8 to 60 ng/dL for an adult female (7).

Even females do have testosterone hormones in them but, at a way lower amount compared to males.

With the easy order home testosterone test kit, you will be able to detect and tell your T-levels or testosterone levels. And, finally put a name or reason to all those symptoms that you have been dealing with!

Why would it be a good to use a test kit for checking my testosterone level

Before we jump into why it’s necessary for you to keep track of your testosterone levels using a home test kit, you should know the benefits of having high levels of testosterones in your system in the first place.

This picture clearly depicts the stark difference between a male with low (left) and high (right) levels of testosterones respectively.

This is a picture of two males with low (left) and high (right) testosterone hormone levels respectively with descriptions provided. www.alzyme.com easy to use home health tests, test kits.

In summary, males with high levels of testosterone seem to possess many benefits and traits that majority of males would desire to have (8).

Can you relate to the picture above, be it the left or the right?

Your observations and suspicion may not be the most accurate in determining whether your testosterone levels are low or high. That is the main reason why having a home test kit for testosterone hormone levels is a good option.

The other important factor of being aware of your T-levels is so that you can make a more informed decision on whether you would require further check-ups with your doctor or any early interventions.

Knowing that your T-levels are on a gradual decline from age 30 years old, it would be wise to start early on maintaining T-levels (3, 4).

A few good reasons people have taken the test (and why you should too) are (9):

  • To diagnose the cause of erectile dysfunction
  • Infertility in men
  • Determine the cause of masculine physical features in women (virilisation)
  • Infertility in women
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)- a disease of ovaries whose symptoms and signs are infertility, acne, virilisation, irregular periods, weight problems
  • Early or late puberty

Like T-levels, estrogen levels can be checked too, in a way exactly like testosterone. Using saliva or blood sample, you can make sure that balance of these two important sex hormones is in check.

Ensuring that your results are not a fluke is pivotal in accuracy thus, providing you a more sound report to assist on any decisions you are about to make.

“The different types of testosterone home test kits on the market”

At this stage, you are more or less decided on making the wiser and safer choice to get your own home test of testosterone. Where do you even start to find one? What are your options?

In the United States, all 49 states are open to receiving a home test kit for testosterone levels except New York due to state law.

Currently in the market, there are two types of testosterone home kit testing available.

They both analyse the same indicator which is the total testosterones levels but via either saliva or blood from your finger or arm vein (9).

Thus, total testosterones give one a more holistic look at T-levels. Also, some research states that blood test are more accurate but some research also argue that saliva is just as accurate (10).

Ultimately, both versions are accurate but it depends on whether a blood or saliva test would be better for specific individuals (10).

Interventions for low testosterone levels

If you have low testosterone levels, you can still do something about it. There are a few ways to approach this and try to increase your T-levels (4). Although there is an option of testosterone replacement therapy, one can use alternative means to increase the T-levels. Some of these alternative treatments are:

  • Maintaining healthy weight or losing weight
  • Regular exercise, especially weight lifting which is shown to increase T-levels
  • Maintaining healthy sleep pattern (7-8 hours)
  • Vitamin D supplements
  • Zinc supplements
  • Incorporating nuts (almond), beans (soybeans, lentils) and eggs in your diet
  • Coffee,
  • Keeping positive state of mind
  • Avoiding food in contact with plastic (17)

In case these procedures don’t show improvement in your T-levels, you should contact your physician and consult with him to start testosterone replacement therapy. Hormones can be substituted in different ways mentioned down below, ranging from simple and non-invasive to injection of testosterone.

  • Skin patches
  • Gels
  • Mouth tablets
  • Pellets
  • Injections

However, this means of treating low T-levels is not ideal as it can also:

  • contribute to sleep apnea
  • cause acne or other skin changes
  • increase risk of hearth disease
  • cause testicle shrinkage
  • breast growth
  • brittle bones(17)

If you experience any of these signs and symptoms, or have a fracture from low force impacts, it is important to contact your physician.

Majority of males who have undergone testosterone therapy treatment feedback that they felt the symptoms of low T-levels start to dissipate in four to six weeks of treatment and, increased muscle mass in three to six months of treatment (4).
